Rape - बलात्कार - The Culture within.

Once again, the Rape buzz is everywhere.
Let's try to understand  this unfortunate part of our existence.
What it is and How it flourished in our society.?
 Starting with the definition,
Let's see what its definition says,
By the way its our irony that we actually have defination for it.

Rape culture is an environment or a culture in which rape and sexual violence is normalized due to the societal attitudes and actions about gender and sexuality

I'll be talking some direct societal facts, and  No shit around feminism or meninism.

Actually ,The nature of such a culture in India has to be viewed through the lens of Intersectionality.
And by the lens of intersectionality, i meant that

The already known fact to us that the Indian patriarchy is Brahmanical in nature and interacts with the systemic biases of society, similarly the rape culture in India also exists within the same setting.

Its a fact and tragedy of our society that,

As communities which have been historically marginalised or discriminated against due to religion, caste, orientation, gender identity, disability, and many other social discriminations , which  resulted as the act of sexual violence as tools of oppression.

Rape culture in our communities is placed within power dynamics and social hierarchies.
We all know that our society worked in hierarchical manner from the beginning.

Hence individuals are subjected to sexual violence as an act of oppression for their gender and as an instrument of persecution of their caste, tribal, or religious identities.

Rape is the most obnoxious form of violence against women. It stems from a patriarchal mindset.
That's a fact.

Sons are considered much more valuable than daughters are, and even religious scriptures shame women.

Several examples are there , but we don't want to recognise them or confront them,

In numerous pieces of ancient literature and texts, rape is shown to be normal, and  if not ,then it is glorified.

The Mahabharata, a religious text, in Book 13 Section 40, claims that

“There is no creature more sinful, than woman.”
I mean how will you justify this statement.
There's no justification to it. Its simply ridiculous.

There's an another example, of glorification.

Vishnu, an important Indian god, is praised for raping the wife (vrinda) of a Demon or Soldier (jalandhar) because this is what stops him from being too powerful later on in the text.

Additionally, the God raped his pregnant sister in law, yet is still worshipped by many in India.

This normalizes rape within Indian society- it shows them that rape is not an inheretly bad thing, since it has been done by so many esteemed figures.

And its not only about indian mythology , But From Greek mythology to Indian mythology there are plenty  of rapping incidents with   queens by Zeus (one of their chief God)

The fair fact is that ,greek mythology accept their acts openly . And on the other hand Indian mythology talks in metaphors.

Well there are also some fuels in today's time who promote this culture.

Oftenly Rape culture is fuelled by media, misogynist songs, ( i mean the songs are incomplete without using phrases like Bitch, whore etc in this era ) ,popular culture, objectification, problematic lyrics, tolerance of rape jokes or sexist joke.

The notions around toxic masculinity, honour and entitlement also fuel  the rape culture

I certainly believe that men and boys are not naturally violent; patriarchal norms make them insensitive.

Therefore, not every man is a part of the problem, but every man can be a part of the solution,"

Thank you for the time.
🙏
